When Tony first saw Richard in 1971 at an L.A. gay bar called The Closet, his heart skipped a beat. It was love at first sight, and in 1975, they married in one of the first highly publicized gay weddings in the US. When they applied to get a Green Card for Tony, who was an Australian citizen, they received a shocking letter from the INS calling them "faggots" and denying Tony resident status. In 1980, they filed the first lawsuit ever asking a US court to recognize a gay marriage in order to apply for resident status. Limited Partnership documents Tony and Richard's incredible 40 year love story and their struggle against the things that always threatened, but failed, to tear them apart: marriage and immigration inequality.
