The Opium Wars (1959)

The narrative begins with Emperor Danguang dispatching Commissioner Lin Zexu to Canton to lead an anti-drug initiative. Upon arrival, Lin adopts a merchant disguise to gather intelligence on the opium trade, witnessing firsthand the detrimental effects of the drug. When foreigners refuse to surrender their opium, Lin imposes a blockade on their residences. One foreigner attempts to escape with the aid of a Chinese official but is apprehended by local fishermen. Lin leverages this incident to persuade Yu Jun to fund the enhancement of coastal defenses. Concurrently, the British ambassador to China, Eliot, instructs opium dealers to relinquish their goods to Lin, assuring them of compensation from the British government. Following the destruction of the opium, the British government retaliates by sending a fleet of warships. The Chinese Emperor, caught off guard, concedes to British demands, leading to Lin's removal from his position and exile. Qi Shan takes over and dismantles the coastal defenses as a conciliatory gesture to the British. However, the local populace persists in their resistance against the foreigners.
