A group of ronin live in poverty in the latter days of the Edo period. They are masterless samurai reduced to drunkenness and debauchery living among social outcasts. Doi is a disgraced and disillusioned former warrior waiting in vain for the call of his old lord. Horo is in love with Oshin, a pickpocket married to Gen'nai, who spends his wife's earnings on other women. And Akaushi is willing to do almost anything to get a drink.
