“We ended up filming in the barren winter which really suited the concept,” says Joe Dempsey of today’s metaphysical music video. “We liked the Vermeer feeling, a cold canvas with the beauty of the light.” Co-directed with his identical twin brother Ben for Ludovico Einaudi’s “Life,” the short offers a nostalgic ode to childhood down the ages–before dealing a genuinely surprising and emotional twist. Taken from the Decca album In a Time Lapse, the new track by the venerated Italian–who has written work for the scores of Black Swan, I’m Still Here and This Is England–is a stirring classical piece perfectly suited to the idyllic country landscapes of the short. “What was appealing was the innocence, the curiosity and wonderment that children naturally bring with them,” says Dempsey, who shot the story written by Robin Warman and Harry Orton in just one day. “But that then became quite an onerous task when you had almost the shortest day of the year.”
