Malacarne (1946) unfolds in the picturesque fishing village of Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily. The narrative revolves around Turi, a man known for his penchant for drinking, gambling, and deceiving women, earning him the nickname "Bad Blood." Despite his flaws, Turi is a proficient fisherman who typically works under the guidance of Don Pietro. The arrival of Mariastella, Don Pietro's naive and inexperienced niece, fresh from the convent, disrupts the village's tranquility. Turi successfully woos Mariastella, leading to a passionate affair. Enraged by their relationship, Don Pietro confronts Turi, resulting in a fatal altercation that lands Turi behind bars. Mariastella gives birth to their son, who is entrusted to a friend. Three years pass before Turi and Mariastella, along with their child, are reunited. However, their joy is short-lived as a series of tragic misunderstandings threaten to tear them apart.
