Three sisters: ten-year-old Ying, six-year-old Zhen and four-year-old Fen are the youngest female members of a multi-generational farming family and expected to contribute to their family’s income. Wang Bing’s documentary is a warm and intimate portrait of a poor Chinese family that lives amidst China’s stunning mountainous Yunnan province. This is an exceptional study in human behavior as the girls seek respite in games and spontaneous singing that ensure they remain childlike despite an early loss of innocence.
