The Teme (1979) follows a renowned yet self-doubting playwright who travels to Vladimir to unwind with a devoted female student and another writer. Despite his belief that his literary contributions lack enduring significance, he maintains a strong sense of self-importance regarding both his work and his personal allure. Upon his arrival, he becomes captivated by a museum guide he encounters. When she joins them for dinner, he attempts to win her over with his charm. However, she reveals that while she once admired his work, she now finds it superficial. This critique leaves him deeply offended. The following day, they stroll through a cemetery where she shares stories about a deceased peasant's poetry, inspiring him to borrow her idea for a new play. Despite his newfound inspiration, she remains unimpressed, leaving him perplexed. That evening, he resorts to spying on her, leading to a series of revelations.
