When several escapes at a German POW camp go wrong, the prisoners begin to think that there is an informer among them. Then Lt. Ainsworth, an artist in civvies street, constructs a dummy which they christen Albert, who can take the place of an inmate, when the men march back from the bath house, which is situated outside the camp, and use it at roll call in order to foil the German guards. The events concerning “Albert” are based on a true story, and took place on the Nazi prison camp Marlag 'O', for Naval Officers in North West Germany, during the spring of 1944. Albert was constructed by John Worsley (1919-2000) and was used in two separates occasions. Worsley made a new Albert for this film and a third one for a retrospective exhibition of his work. After the show, it was donated to the Royal Naval Museum of Portsmouth.
