The Unforgiven (2005) begins on a sweltering summer evening when Tae-jung gets a phone call from Seung-young, an acquaintance from their junior high days. Their paths crossed again when Seung-young enlisted in the military under Tae-jung's command. Although Tae-jung has since left the service, Seung-young is still actively serving. During his leave, Seung-young requests a meeting, but Tae-jung appears uneasy about the encounter. Towards the end of his military tenure, Tae-jung, then a sergeant, took Seung-young under his wing due to their shared history. Seung-young struggled to adapt to the rigid structure of military life, which revolves around commands and discipline. Despite Tae-jung's efforts, Seung-young's difficulties persist, leading to his increasing isolation from his peers. Tae-jung finds himself in an uncomfortable position because of Seung-young's behavior. After Tae-jung's discharge, Seung-young's situation worsens, leading to a series of changes in his behavior.
