Cab. Nr. 13 (1926)

Cab. Nr. 13 (1926) commences with a woman fleeing her wealthy husband, who gives birth to a daughter in the residence of a washerwoman. Tragically, the mother perishes during childbirth, but the infant survives. The washerwoman places the baby in a horse-drawn Parisian taxi (No. 13) and abandons her. The birth records are misplaced within a large book. Years later, a destitute student purchases the book, and a bookshelf collapse reveals the hidden documents. The student discovers that the records pertain to a millionaire who has been searching for his missing pregnant wife for sixteen years. The student locates the washerwoman and deceives her into revealing the baby's fate. Meanwhile, the baby, now grown into Lili Damita, has been adopted by the cab driver and his wife. She is deeply in love with her boyfriend. The student, realizing the potential fortune, attempts to win Lili's affection away from her boyfriend. Lili, now aware of her true lineage, must decide between her biological family and her adoptive family. The film concludes happily, with a poignant scene where Lili, reunited with her original boyfriend, is escorted down the aisle by both her fathers. The film is a delightful blend of drama and light-hearted entertainment, featuring memorable scenes and excellent direction by Curtiz.
