This is the story of the Manrique family, a provincial family that by decision of one of its patriarchs decided to try his luck in the big city of Bogota and ended up creating a criminal organization that was born by accident, grew stronger, then tried to reintegrate into society but tragically succumbed by creating an illegal world. The decade of the thirties brought a violent, radical and armed political conflict in the country. Tomas Manrique had to flee his town with his wife Josefina and son Pedrito, the night an armed group untimely entered a party killing all the men of the opposing party. Having started a war he did not want to be part of, Tomás decides to move with his family to the capital, where he takes a job in a screw factory. One afternoon, a group of thieves enters the factory and Tomás ends up becoming a hero by accident when he knocks out the criminals, thus gaining the appreciation and trust of his boss Facundo, which allows Tomás, a dandy by nature, to meet and begin to desire an opulent life, full of luxuries and comforts. But Tomás knows that amassing such a fortune implies many years of work, and he is not willing to wait that long. In complicity with Pascual, a thief and new friend, he decides to rob his boss's house. To get the weapons that would allow the robbery, they negotiate with a mafioso, who in exchange asks for a share of the loot and demands that he leave his son Pedro as collateral. Tomás accepts, but the robbery gets complicated and he ends up shooting his boss dead, only to later shoot the mobster who lent them the weapons and not share any of the profits with him. He rescues his son and returns home with the feeling of having done the right thing. This marks the beginning of Tomás' life in the world of crime, and little by little the Manrique's rise in status to a stable well-being through legal and illegal means. However, Tomas' dream of becoming a well-to-do bourgeois is never fulfilled.
