Sawako Nakahara is a third-year junior high school student whose family life has been gradually falling apart over the past few years. First her father attempted suicide, then her mother moved out and her brother quit school. Throughout it all Sawako attempts to keep her composure and continue doing well in school even with all the problems in her life.
