Set in Rotterdam during the early half of the 20th century, the film begins as a compelling murder mystery where we witness a man fleeing from the scene of a crime. Once arrested by the police and taken into custody, Jacob Katadreuffe (Fedja van Huet) reveals to the interrogators that he is the son of the recently deceased town bailiff, Dreverhaven (Jan Decleir). The murder investigation focuses on Jacob's account of his relationship with his father, which is defined by a series of traumatic and disappointing encounters.
