Giorno di nozze (1942) follows the story of the Bonotti family, an elderly couple from humble beginnings. They have raised their daughter, Mariella, in a prestigious boarding school outside of Rome, keeping their financial struggles hidden from her. Mariella's life takes an unexpected turn when she learns that a wealthy financier's son has proposed to her. The wedding is set for the following month, but Mariella is devastated when she discovers the modest living conditions of her parents. Fearful that her fiancé will call off the wedding upon seeing her family's humble situation, Bonotti makes a drastic decision: he will renovate their apartment, even if it means financial ruin.
