Silesia, January 1945: Together with the majority of his village community, Baron Malte flees west away from advancing Soviet troops. He and the refugees set up house at Falkenstein Castle n the Bavarian Woods. Ten years later, the Silesian refugees are busy making new lives for themselves in their new homes. For his part, the baron is attempting to re-create an old glassworks near the castle. His nephew Martin, who's moved to France and become a businessman, wants to help him with this. However, Martin, whose life revolves around profit and success, thinks his uncle should sell the castle and go out to pasture. Fortunately, the baron's foster daughter, Marianne, is able to make Martin see there's more to life than money. Thus, Martin is able to help the hard-working Silesians and, at the same time, help convict a thieving administrator, who's been pocketing a nice chunk of the baron's money while delivering shoddy goods to build the glassworks.
